Palace backs Con-Ass to amend Charter (10:26 a.m.)

MANILA -- Malacañang virtually endorsed the Constituent Assembly (Con-Ass) as the mechanism to best achieve Charter change after Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye urged the Senate and the House of Representatives to come up with fastest and most economical way in undertaking the reforms.

Con-Ass proponents had claimed that it is cheaper and more practical than the Constitutional Convention (Concon) as Congress could easily be convened into a Con-Ass unlike in a Concon where the members have to be elected by the people first. The House heavily supports Con-Ass while some members of the Senate favors Concon.

"“We believe that all voices should be heard on the issue of Charter change and we continue to urge the two chambers of the Congress to synchronize their moves as to how the process can be carried out in the most expeditious and economical way," Bunye said.

Bunye added that Charter change, aside from being urgent, "is a once in a lifetime opportunity and he is hoping that the lawmakers would recognize it the way the public has." (JMR)
