Police on full alert for class opening
MANILA -- National Police Chief Arturo Lomibao has ordered police nationwide to be on full alert status effective Sunday midnight for Monday's opening of classes.
Philippine National Police (PNP) Spokesman Samuel Pagdilao said all policemen are required to report to their mother units "for accounting and final briefing prior to their deployment for intensified police visibility."
Under the police's Oplan Balik Eskwela 2006, officers would be fielded in the vicinity of schools, roads, terminals, public conveyances, and crime-prone areas. He did not say how many policemen would be deployed under the operation plan.
"Oplan Balik Eskwela shall shield students from snatchers, pickpockets, KFR (kidnapping-for-ransom), drug pushers, and other criminal elements who might prey on innocent students," he said.
Pagdilao said security have been beefed up last Sunday at seaports, airports and bus terminals for students coming back from provinces while checkpoints have been established in "strategic locations" with "force multipliers" like barangay tanods.
He said the police expect there would be congested roads. The police's Traffic Management Group has prepared its own contingency plans to address possible heavy traffic during the opening of classes. (VR/Sunnex)
