School principal gunned down By Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre
MAPANDAN -- A school principal was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding men in the town last Wednesday.
The victim, Tessie Morante, 57, principal of the Golden Elementary School in Barangay Golden in Mapandan, sustained three gunshot wounds at the back and in the right ear.
Mapandan Police Chief Leonardo Tamondong said prior to the killing, the victim received a threatening text message from someone sometime in May.
A report said Morante and Myra dela Peña, a teacher, were on their way home on board a tricycle along Fire Tree Avenue in Barangay Asedra when two men wearing a crash helmet fired at them. The killers were on a motorcycle without a license plate.
The driver of the tricycle, Victoriano Lopez, said he rushed Morante to the Mapandan Community Hospital where the victim was declared dead by an attending physician.
He said the perpetrators, who fled after the incident, did not hurt him and dela Peña.
Tamondong said his men recovered from the crime scene a fired cartridge for caliber .45 pistol and a deformed slug of unknown caliber.
He said one metal jacket of a slug was also recovered inside the tricycle.
