5 carjackers die in shootout with cops (10:36 a.m.)

MANILA -- Five suspected carnappers were killed in a gunfight with operatives of the Quezon City police district along a major thoroughfare in that city Wednesday night.

Senior Superintendent Roger James Brillanes, chief of the Quezon City police's District Intelligence and Investigation Division, said Thursday that four of the unidentified alleged carnappers died on the spot while a fifth died upon arrival in a nearby hospital.

Brillantes said the incident occurred along Kamuning Road at around 10:30 p.m, shortly after the suspected carjackers, on board a stolen taxicab, refused to flag down on the orders of the police's anti-carnapping unit.

An hour before the shootout, Brillantes said the Quezon City police received information that a Reno taxi with license plate PWM 304 was stolen along the Manila International Airport (MIA) Road in Pasay City, prompting them to deploy anti-carnapping policemen.

At around 10 p.m., Brillantes said Quezon City policemen spotted the vehicle at the corner of Quezon and Roosevelt Avenues. The alleged carjackers refused to stop when flagged down by the lawmen and sped towards Kamuning road, where a firefight ensued. (VR)
