Intelligence officer relieved over illegal arrest, torture of 5 Estrada supporters (11:29 a.m.)
MANILA -- The Armed Forces leadership has ordered the relief of a top intelligence official to pave the way for a full-blown investigation involving the arrest and alleged torture of five supporters of former President Joseph Estrada.
Lieutenant Colonel Henry Robinson, commander of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Military Intelligence Group 15 (Isafp-MIG 15), would be relinquishing his post on Saturday, said sources who declined to be named.
The sources requested that the name of Robinson's successor be withheld also. They said the name of the incoming MIG 15 commander should be kept from public knowledge because his job involves intelligence works.
One of the sources said Isafp chief Commodore Leonardo Calderon ordered the relief of Robinson "in view of the ongoing investigation, pre-trial investigation" being conducted by the office of the Judge Advocate General.
It was the MIG 15 that abducted and allegedly tortured the five Estrada supporters. Also involved in the "arrest" was the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). (VR)
