P5 million 'hot' ready-to-wear dresses seized By Marna H. Dagumboy
CAMP OLIVAS -- Anti-smuggling operatives confiscated on Wednesday some P5 million worth of ready-to-wear items loaded in two closed vans en route to a residential area in Barangay Anunas, Angeles City.
The shipment was supposed to be brought to a warehouse inside the Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) but was instead diverted a subdivision in Angeles, a zone official said. The cargo consists of 8,400 Omen knit signature jackets.
Arnel Maguillo, chief of the Anti-Smuggling Force at the CSEZ, said two Taiwanese believed to be consignees of the "smuggled" cargo were also arrested.
He identified them as Chen Ching Feng and Sally Chen, owners of the Golden Stone Garments Incorporated, with business address at Building 5204 Lily Hill Road corner Gil Puyat Avenue, CSEZ.
"Both Taiwanese violated the Tariff and Customs Law," said Maguillo, explaining that once tax-free items are brought outside the zone, taxes and other customs obligations, especially for bulk cargo, should have been paid.
Maguillo said the shipment, worth US$92,000, was brought not to a Clark warehouse but to the suspects' rented house at 25-16 New York Street, Villasol Subdivision, Barangay Anunas, Angeles City.
He believed the confiscated items were intended for distribution to the SM and Robinsons malls.
Maguillo said the seized items were brought to the Clark Customs office for appraisal and payment of tax and other duties. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
