ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Member-states of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) are expected to pour in massive financial assistance that would reach billions of pesos to economically uplift the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), a top official of the Muslim autonomous region said.

Armm Labor and Employment Secretary Muslimin Jann Jakilan made this announcement, saying the support is in response to the call of the OIC secretary general for a massive financial support to the autonomous region.

Jakilan said the OIC secretary general made the call to its 57 member-states after finding it out that Armm is lagging behind in terms of economic development, including in the areas of health and education services.

An OIC team visited Armm last month to monitor the progress and development of the 1996 peace agreement entered into by the government and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

Armm covers the Provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur and Marawi City.

Jakilan said they expect MNLF Vice Chair Hatimil Hassan to announce the financial assistance packages of the OIC-member states for the entire region during the 5th Armm Business Congress to be held from June 26 to 27, in Lamitan, Basilan.

"We are waiting for them to get the complete data (of the financial assistance)," Jakilan said as he disclosed that Hassan along with some MNLF leaders attend the OIC meeting in Azerbajian. (Sunnex)
