6 youths drown in rough waves brought by tropical storm (11:50 a.m.)

MANILA -- Six young people drowned in stormy weather on a beach west of Manila, police said Tuesday, blaming a tropical storm.

The six youngsters were swimming on a beach in Morong town in Bataan province on Monday afternoon when the weather turned nasty, and they were overwhelmed by rough waves, police officer Pablito Gunio Jr. said.

He said some of them were still alive when they were brought to a hospital but could not be saved.

Weather forecasters said the storm, packing winds of up to 75 kilometers per hour (45 mph), moved away from the Philippines overnight toward the South China Sea.

Civil defense officials said they had unconfirmed reports that the bodies of two other people were recovered from the sea.(AP)
