Arroyo told to also focus on education, health By Jane Cadalig
BAGUIO CITY -- Aside from infrastructure development projects, La Trinidad Mayor Nestor Fongwan said Wednesday that government should also spend its resources on education and the delivery of basic health services to the public.
Fongwan said education and health services are among the major concerns that should be addressed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The President's State of the Nation Address (Sona) last Monday dwelt more on the development of major infrastructures, particularly in the countryside, to hasten economic progress in the areas.
The mayor said he was expecting Arroyo to mention how she could improve the delivery of quality education and health services to the people.
He said the problem on classroom shortage is evident not only in highly urbanized cities and municipalities but also in developing towns like La Trinidad.
"The issues on the lack of classrooms and the dwindling access of the people to basic health services, are, for me, the other concerns that need to be given more emphasis by the government," he added.
Fongwan, a known Arroyo supporter, personally attended the Sona, and was among the personalities who earned special mention from the President.
While the President's critics doubt the possibility of accomplishing all the development projects mentioned in the Sona due to unclear declaration on where to get funds for it, Fongwan said he has high hopes these would be realized.
"Being a worker of the government, I believe the plans mentioned by the President could be realized," he said. (Sun.Star Baguio/Sunnex)
