Typhoon displaces 20T families in metro, Luzon
MANILA -- A total of 28,177 families or 137,957 persons were affected by typhoon "Glenda," which also submerged low-lying areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) and Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog regions in floodwaters, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
Of the figure, 6,175 families or 30,797 persons have been displaced and 640 families (3,270 persons) of which are housed in different evacuation areas.
Most of the affected families were from Central Luzon numbering 17,038 or 82,189 persons followed by NCR (6,119 families or 30,119 persons). In Southern Tagalog, the storm affected 5,020 families or 25,100 persons.
As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the typhoon was already 600 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes with sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph. It was 820 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes Tuesday night.
NDCC Executive Officer Glenn Rabonza said two persons were missing in the aftermath of the typhoon. They were Raymundo Limpin, 45, of Quezon City, and Dodong Dionisio, 21, of San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Officials said the two were believed to have drowned.
In Central Luzon, Rabonza said flooding was monitored in San Antonio, Zambales; Dipalupihan, Bataan; and Magalang, Pampanga and caused the collapse of canals and earth dikes and eroding roads in the areas.
In Pampanga and Zambales, Rabonza said the NDCC recorded damage to rice and other crops at P24.4 million. There were no immediate reports on the extent of damage in the other affected areas.
Rabonza said relief workers have already extended P420,464 worth of assistance to affected families in the towns of Magalang, Guaga, Lubao, Bacolor, and Masantol, all in Pampanga, as of Wednesday morning.
He also said the social welfare department has P9.4 million worth of relief goods on standby "to augment the needs in the affected regions should the need arises." (VR/Sunnex)
