Ex-cop chief mulls going back to public service By Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre
MANGALDAN, Pangasinan -- Former national police chief Arturo Lomibao is considering a return to government service.
"It is perhaps in my blood. Imagine for the past 38 years in government, I had been in the police service. I want to experience other jobs aside from it," he told local journalists when he visited the town on Thursday.
Lomibao said one thing he missed in his 38 years in the police service is a good sleep.
But despite the opportunity to catch up with lost sleep, he said: "I intend to go back to a more hectic life, if ever I get a position either in the corporate world or in government service."
He said wanted to go back to government service, either in an appointive or elective position.
Lomibao said he already expressed his wish to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in one of their meetings. He said he told the President he was available for any position that she considers him competent to hold.
He clarified that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) chief post was never offered to him. He said reports that he would be designated as NBI director after his retirement were mere speculations "maybe because there was no permanent NBI director yet."
But if and when the position is offered him, he said he will not reject it as "it is an opportunity to serve again."
Lomibao also expressed his interest for an elective government post but he declined to reveal what position he will seek when election time comes.
"The military and police service is autocratic as one has to follow directives, otherwise there is a corresponding punishment. In the civilian world, that is not so. You have to be persuasive and participative in all matters that affect governance. Adjustment maybe difficult, but its more on how you look at it," he said.
Lomibao may already be out of the police service but he does not like to be entirely detached from the organization, which he loves and cherishes. He said he keeps himself abreast with the goings on in the Philippine National Police (PNP).
"I can give suggestions if sought. Of course, I want my programs to be continued. When I learned that Gen. (Oscar) Calderon was going to be appointed as chief, I asked him to continue the PNP Transformation Program. He said yes and I am very happy for that," Lomibao said. (Sunnex)
