Floods ram through Davao Sur, Makilala
DAVAO CITY -- A total of 35 houses were destroyed in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, while two died and four were reported missing in Makilala, North Cotabato, as flashfloods rampaged through a riverside barangay and broke a bridge late Thursday.
Traffic from Cotabato area to Davao was also cut off because of the collapse of the bridge.
Water level rose in Barangay Kisante in Makilala at around 9 p.m., washing off a house at Sitio Colong and a bridge at Barangay Kisante in Makilala.
The bridge at Kisnate snapped, taking with it a Honda Civic car driven by one Alberto Tuberna. Tuberna and three other residents who were not immediately identified are still missing.
Two bodies of children were also found floating in the floodwaters and police are still trying to identify them.
In Barangay Poblacion, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, 35 houses were washed away by the floodwaters at around 11 p.m. Thursday following continuous rainfall the past days.
The Municipal Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC) identified the affected homeowners as Ariel and Lucria Domingo, Allan and Alex Pagdalian, Rosita, Danilo and Gaudencio Santarin, Jimmy Abrigana, Erlinda Glenogo, Conie Recopelasyon, Crispin Antona, Arlene Camag, Lyn Lagipal, Serio Alo, Lelia We, Lorita Warin, Leng Quiñonez, Ruben Unabia, George Fuentespiña, Romil Basculsillo, Gina Solis, Danilo Buagas, Condra Bastatas, all residents of Poblacion.
Also washed away by the rampaging floodwaters were the personal belongings of the residents and their farm animals, including seven horses, three carabaos, two cows, hogs, and chickens.
The local government has already released relief goods to the victims. A relocation site has already been identified, as the town mayor will no longer allow the families to return to their riverside homes. (Pooled reports from Sun.Star Superbalita)
