Poll body files charges v. double registrants in autonomous region By Bong Garcia
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to file charges against thousands of double registrants in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) discovered during the cleansing of the official voters' list.
Armm Comelec Assistant Director Vidzfar Juli said that they have, so far, removed 8,000 names of double registrants in the official lists of voters in the autonomous region.
Juli said that at least 2,000 of them are now under preliminary investigation by the Comelec in Armm.
The autonomous region comprises of the Provinces of Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao and the Islamic City of Marawi.
"The law department (of the Comelec) is ready to file the necessary charges against them," he revealed.
Those who will be found guilty for registering more than once will be imprisoned for six years, according to the election official.
He said the number of double registrants in the Armm is expected to increase as they have yet to complete the review of the official lists of registered voters.
He said they have until December to cleanse the voters' lists in preparation for the conduct of elections in 2007. (Sunnex)
