High court junks suit seeking disbarment of lawmaker, lawyer (10:38 a.m.)

MANILA -- The Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed a disbarment case filed by a provincial journalist against Senator Edgardo Angara and another lawyer in connection with an alleged conspiracy by some members of the opposition to hatch a demolition job against First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

In a decision penned by Associate Justice Minita Chico-Nazario, the SC's First Division junked the complaint lodged by petitioner Art Sampana against Angara and lawyer Demaree JB Raval, a consultant in the senator's office, seeking to reverse a decision of the Commission on Bar Discipline of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP).

Sampana accused Angara and Raval of violation of the Code of Professional Responsibility, rendering them unfit to practice law.

He claimed that Raval induced him to include false accusations in his affidavit dated Aug. 22, 2001 against Arroyo and other personalities in a range of controversies, among them the multimillion-peso Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Fund (PCSO) fund scam. (ECV/Sunnex)
