Muslim rebels protest arrest of member (3:30 p.m.)

MANILA -- A Muslim rebel group filed a protest with the government Tuesday, claiming that one of its members and two civilians allegedly found carrying improvised bombs while about to board a Manila-bound ferry were apparently framed.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said the arrests on Sunday violate a cease-fire forged three years ago as part of peace negotiations with the government.

Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, police director of an autonomous Muslim region, earlier said police and military operatives arrested the three men outside the SuperFerry 3 docked at Parang town, 870 kilometers (540 miles) south of Manila.

Goltiao identified the alleged members of the MILF's special operations group as Razak Macarimbang, 46, Wahad Sandigan, 34, and Sammy Gampong, 26. They were allegedly carrying two homemade bombs and claimed they had been ordered to conduct bombings in Manila. (AP)
