More than 100 Region 10 nurses not sworn in

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- Over a hundred successful examinees of the June 2006 Nursing Licensure Examination from Northern Mindanao are still barred from taking oath and being issued professional identification cards, the regional Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) reported Friday.

Also, the over 500 exam passers who availed of the "emergency" oath taking administered at the regional regulatory office have yet to receive their professional IDs from PRC-Manila.

A number of those failed the Nursing Licensure Examination have already filed their documents to retake the exams this December. Deadline for filing was set Thursday.

Moreover, the regional PRC disclosed there is no evidence that the leakage during the examination reached the region considering there was only a mere 42 percent who passed the exam from this area.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, quoting an initial report on the leakage probe by the National Bureau of Investigation, said on Friday in Manila that the leakage occurred only in Luzon. He did not provide other details.

Earlier, the University of Sto. Thomas (UST) filed a petition at the Court of Appeals (CA) to invalidate the examination due to reports of a leakage on that exam.

The CA then issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) enjoining the PRC from administering the oath to those who passed.

PRC regional director Estrella Malik said there were about 1,800 who took the licensure exam and only 700 examinees passed.

She said there were already over 500 successful examinees of the licensure exam who took their oaths before the CA issued a restraining order.

"There are still over a hundred who were not able to take the oath," she told Sun.Star Friday.

For those who already took their oath, Malik explained they are not actually out of trouble yet.

She said they have yet to be issued their professional ID cards.

"We have already submitted their forms to Manila but because of the TRO perhaps Manila could not act on them yet," she said.

Malik explained that the "edge" for those who have taken the oath is that their registration papers had already been submitted and will be processed ahead of those who were not able to do so.

She added the PRC's stand on the retake for those who already took and passed the exams will be dependent on the court's orders.

Malik said they have not seen any evidence showing the controversial leakage in the exams reached Cagayan de Oro or any part of Northern Mindanao.

She cited how only 42 percent passed the exams. "The exams in the region have been clean and they really worked hard for it," she said. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
