Ailing Imelda allowed to go abroad to seek treatment (9:50 a.m.)
MANILA -- The Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) has granted a motion of former First Lady Imelda Marcos for leave to travel to Hong Kong for 30 days to get an alternative medicine for various ailments, including a recurring dry cough and persistent knee problem.
In an order, Manila RTC Judge Silvino Pampilo Jr. said he granted Marcos' motion based on humanitarian considerations, junking the opposition filed by the government through the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG).
"After careful perusal, this court resolves to grant the instant motion based on humanitarian considerations and the right of the accused as enshrined in the Constitution," Pampilo said.
The court granted Marcos' motion subject to several conditions, such that she shall travel only from Sept. 5 to Oct. 5, 2006; and that the itinerary shall cover Hong Kong, China and not any other place.
Pampilo also ordered Marcos to post a travel bond of P10,000 for each case or a total of P320,000 for 32 pending cases before the Manila court.
"Within five days after her return, accused shall advise this court of her arrival in writing appending therein a photocopy of her passport with the stamp of arrival by the Bureau on Immigration and Deportation (BI)," the judge ordered. (ECV) |
