Arroyos seek expulsion of RP congressman (6:55 p.m.)

MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's husband escalated his attacks against an opposition congressman Wednesday by seeking his ouster from the House of Representatives for allegedly fabricating charges that his family kept a secret bank account in Germany.

Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo -- joined by his son, Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo, and his brother, Ignacio Arroyo, who are both congressmen -- filed a complaint seeking the expulsion of Representative Alan Peter Cayetano for "malicious and defamatory accusations against our family."

The Arroyos said Cayetano "maliciously insinuated and intimated that our family laundered 'hundreds of millions of dollars."'

Mike Arroyo last week filed 13 libel complaints against Cayetano after producing a certification from the HypoVereinsbank in Munich that he did not have any account with them. He sought 30 million pesos (US$588,235; euro457,735) in damages from Cayetano.

On Monday, the President went on national TV accusing Cayetano of peddling lies about the "nonexistent account." (AP)
