Left-wing activist shot dead (4:40 p.m.)

MANILA -- Unidentified gunmen fatally shot a left-wing activist in the central Philippines on Thursday, making him the latest victim in a spate of political killings, police and activists said.

Victor Olayvar, president of the left-wing alliance Bayan in Bohol province, was riding a motorcycle taxi when armed men blocked the vehicle's path and opened fire, Provincial Police Director Arturo Evangelista said.

Police are investigating the incident.

Local human rights group Karapatan said Olayvar was the 317th activist among 748 civilians killed since 2001 by suspected security forces, who often allege left-wing groups are fronts for communist rebels. (AP)
