Cebu explosion kills 2, wounds 9 (9:00 a.m.)

CEBU CITY -- An explosion early Monday in a building in Mandaue City killed two people and injured nine others, dySS reported, saying a gas tank may have triggered the blast.

The blast shook the two-story building that housed three shops, including an auto supply shop, a laundry and a furniture shop.

An unidentified woman and one Felipe Hermosa died in the explosion. Elizabeth and Rolando Booc were passing by the area when the explosion happened. They were rushed to the hospital together with Trosio Genaro, Elvie Sanchez, Vicente Maloloy-on, Carmela Cabago, Ma. Luisa Cabago, Rosemarie Cabago and Marjorie Tiglao.

Police teams were inspecting the site but initial reports suggested the blast may have been triggered by a gas tank.

The Philippines was on alert for the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in the US, and Cebu is the venue of a December summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a regional grouping.(AP/Sunnex)
