Homemade bomb recovered near ceremony for controversial general (7:55 p.m.)
MANILA -- Army troops on Monday found a powerful bomb outside army headquarters where a ceremony was held for a two-star general accused by left-wing activists of massive human rights violations, officials said.
The bomb, made from C-4 plastic explosives and a grenade, was found on a road outside the army camp in Manila's Makati commercial district and detonated safely by experts while a parade was being held for the retirement of army Major General Jovito Palparan, officials said.
The bomb was discovered by street sweepers, who notified army officials, they said.
Army spokesman Major Ernesto Torres said among the suspects were New People's Army guerrillas, who accused Palparan of leading the government's aggressive counterinsurgency campaign.
"We suspect that it's the handiwork of the communists, because he was aggressive in his campaign against the communist terrorists," Torres said. (AP) |
