Lawmen foil kidnapping of Zambo businessman (11:10 p.m.)
By Bong Garcia

ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Local police have foiled the kidnapping of a businessman with the arrest of the alleged supposed kidnappers earlier in Barangay Sangali, east of Zamboanga City.

Police Station 3 reported that the four persons earlier arrested in a raid in Sangali village were discussing plans on how to seize a prominent businessman when a raiding team collared them inside a house in the coast of the barangay.

The police initially suspected the group to be terrorists, but they turned out to be extortionists, operating in Barangay Sangali and in the neighboring barangays in the eastern part of this city, after thorough interrogation, according to the police.

Police Station 3 reported that the suspects were responsible for extorting money from businessmen in Sangali and traders from the nearby villages.

Sangali serves as the trading hub for fish traders, as the fishing port is located in the area. (Sunnex)
