Mother of 10 gunned down; link to drugs checked
CEBU CITY -- Barely a month after giving birth to her 10th child, a 35-year-old woman was gunned down by two motorcycle-riding men past 1 p.m. Tuesday in Barangay Suba, Cebu City.
The bullet that hit Marissa M. Abellana in the nape ended her life.
Homicide investigators ruled out the involvement of vigilantes, but are verifying reports that the woman allegedly sold shabu and recently failed to surrender her sales.
Marissa and her husband Abel, 40, were walking along Magsaysay Street and heading home when gunfire rang out. Marissa fell, bleeding.
Abel said he saw two men on a Honda Wave motorcycle as he looked back, but he scampered for safety when they aimed a gun at him and fired again.
When the perpetrators left the scene, Abel ran back to his wife, loaded her in a trisikad and pedaled all the way to the Cebu City Medical Center.
Abel told a team of homicide investigators led by SPO1 Desiderio Mendaros that although the perpetrators were wearing bike helmets, their faces were exposed, so he could still identify them, given the chance.
He, however, could not give detailed descriptions. Responding homicide investigators recovered two empty shells from a .45 pistol.
Mendaros told Sun.Star Cebu Tuesday that several residents in the area, who requested not to be identified, said the couple was involved in the illegal drug trade.
The residents also told Mendaros that the perpetrators were already seen in the area before the couple passed by.
Mendaros said they are still verifying this information.
He said he tried to ask Abel about the alleged drug link, but the latter declined to comment.
Grudge?
In a separate attack, one person was killed while two others were injured in a shooting at dawn Tuesday on J. Tabura Street, Poblacion-Pardo, Cebu City.
Lesley del Mundo Reroma, 27, a graduating computer science student of the Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), died of three gunshot wounds in the chest, back and abdomen.
He died on the way to the hospital.
Reroma's friends---identified as nursing student Ruel E. Guinita, 22, and Stephen B. Mabunay, 30, of Sitio Tabuk-Kanal, Pardo---were treated at the Cebu City Medical Center. Both were described as members of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity.
The Homicide Section, led by SPO2 Rey Cuyos, is investigating whether the attack was fraternity-related.
Information gathered by the homicide investigators showed that prior to the shooting, the victims were drinking at the house of one Redemtor Rojo, until they decided to leave at 1:20 a.m.
While they were talking along the road outside Rojo's house, two men approached and fired at them.
Policemen from the Pardo Police Station and homicide investigators recovered four empty shells from a .45 pistol. (JST of Sun.Star Cebu)
