Nursing board exec linked to exam leakage nabbed for 'estafa' (5:40 p.m.)

MANILA -- Police have arrested a member of the Board of Nursing (BON), who was implicated in the controversial nursing licensure examination leakage last June, for alleged estafa and illegal recruitment charges.

Arrested was Virginia Madeja, one of the two BON officials who were tagged as those behind the leakage. She was nabbed by Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) policemen in Bagumbayan, Taguig City by virtue of arrest warrants issued by Judge Guillermo Purgahan of the Manila Regional Trial Court.

Madeja, aside from her involvement in the nursing examination scandal, is also being linked to the anomalous large-scale recruitment of nurses in the US in 2000 wherein she recruited but failed to send a number of nurse-applicants abroad.

Also arrested for the same offense was Lorna Felicio, 54, a real estate broker. Edgardo Valmorida accused Felicio of duping him P20,000.

Valmorida said he gave the money to Felicio for the filing of a case with an Antipolo City court against his lady boarder for non-payment of house rentals, but was surprised to find out that no case had been filed. (JFF)
