Students pelt armed forces chief with eggs, mud (9:40 p.m.)

MANILA -- Students pelted the Philippines' armed forces chief of staff with eggs and mud on Friday at a university in Quezon city, the military said.

General Hermogenes Esperon was leaving a conference hall at the University of the Philippines where he had been addressing a forum, when at least 10 students began chanting "fascist military" and throwing eggs and mud, hitting Esperon on his back and pants, armed forces spokesman Bartolome Bacarro said.

Bacarro said Esperon later joked about the incident and said that he did not plan to press charges.

The students did not explain their attack, but earlier such demonstrations have taken place to protest the increasing tide of murders of left-wing activists, widely blamed on the military. (AP)
