ILOILO CITY -- A minibus carrying more than 40 people was swept away by a swollen river in the central Philippines on Monday and at least 23 people died and 17 others missing, police said.

The overcrowded bus was crossing a bridge in Igbaras town in mountainous Iloilo province, about 430 kilometers southeast of Manila, when a flash flood swept into the Tangyan River, police officer Norberto Elardo said.
