2 soldiers killed as troops press offensive v. Muslim militants (9:30 p.m.)

MANILA -- Two Army soldiers were killed in a gunbattle Wednesday as they pressed an offensive against al-Qaida-linked militants on southern Jolo island, with the military vowing not to be distracted by apparent rebel diversionary bomb attacks.

Army scout rangers clashed with an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf guerrillas near Jolo's mountainous Patikul town in fierce fighting that killed the two and wounded eight others.

An unknown number of militants were killed, military chief General Hermogenes Esperon said. (AP)
