MANILA -- Police on Thursday announced the arrest of a senior communist guerrilla commander linked to a number of rebel attacks in the country's north.

Leopoldo Caluza, commander of communist New People's Army guerrillas in the Central Luzon region, was arrested late Monday in an apartment in Baguio city, 210 kilometers (130 miles) north of Manila, said Chief Superintendent Ismael Rafanan.

Caluza, 49, was unarmed and with his wife when arrested following a two-month intelligence operation, according to Rafanan, the regional police chief. (AP)
