DAVAO CITY -- Friday the 13th proved to be a bad day for Davao region's fifth most wanted criminal when police authorities in Digos City arrested him.

The arrested wanted person was identified as Gaga Lopez alias Ampong, 35 years old, married and a native of Mabini, Compostela Valley. Ampong has a P300,000 reward on his head for robbery and frustrated homicide.

Authorities nabbed Ampong at the vicinity of Chapter 7, Tienda Aplaya in Digos City, Davao del Sur at around 5 a.m. Friday.

The arresting officers had a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Hilarion P. Clapis Jr., Executive Judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 3 in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley Province.

Ampong carries a monetary reward of P300,000 for his capture as per the Department of Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular Number 2004-11 dated February 10, 2004.

Ampong, along with Junier Arip alias Agong and Tata Gumanlat Dialupan, all residents of Poblacion Mabini, Compostela Valley, were charged in court for the robbing and slay attempt on Mark Maraat sometime in March 7, 2000 at sitio Manaklay in Barangay Pindasan, Mabini.

Prior to his arrest, Ampong was the remaining suspect at large following the arrest of his two other co-accused.

Based on court records, the suspects abducted Maraat, then a third year high school student of Maryknoll High School now Cor Jesu High School in Poblacion Mabini, who at that time was waiting for a tricycle to go to school.

The suspects then brought the victim to Sitio Manaklay. While in the area, the boy tried to free himself and attacked Ampong with a ballpen, hitting him at his right eyebrow.

Ampong in turn mauled Maraat until he fell to the ground unconscious.

Believing the victim was dead, the three suspects allegedly took the victim's pair of shoes, wrist watch, and undetermined amount of money and fled.

Passersby saw the victim and brought him to the Davao Regional Hospital in Tagum City wherein the timely medical attention given to the victim saved him from near death.

The police dubbed Ampong as a "Mystery Man" at the start of the manhunt since they could not find any records, warrants of arrest, photo, even biodata of the suspect during initial investigation. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
