Criminal charges recommended v. TV show host, 16 officers (9:10 p.m.)
MANILA -- Prosecutors on Thursday recommended filing criminal charges against a TV star and 16 executives of the country's largest network in connection with a stampede at a televised game show that killed 74 people.
More than 500 people were also injured during the Feb. 4 stampede, when a huge crowd surged toward a stadium gate in a frenzy to get raffle tickets and seats for the show "Wowowee" in suburban Pasig city, trampling elderly women and children.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered a probe and promised that those found liable would be prosecuted and punished.
A five-member prosecutorial team recommended to Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales that TV show host Willie Revillame and 16 executives and officers of ABS-CBN network be charged for criminal negligence for failing to prevent the stampede, officials said.
Among those charged were ABS-CBN vice president for entertainment Maria Rosario Santos-Concio and the network's assistant vice president and head security Cipriano Luspo, according to an 80-page report of the prosecutors. (AP) |
