Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The bureau defines tropical storms as having winds of 64 kilometers to 118 kilometers per hour while a typhoon has winds that exceed 118 kph.

As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasted that the eye of typhoon Cimaron (locally named as Paeng) was seen at 290 kilometers east northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or at 510 kilometers east southeast of Casiguran, Aurora with maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

By Sunday afternoon, the eye of the typhoon will be at 170 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora; landfall over Aurora-Isabela area then cross Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur by afternoon; 100 kilometers southwest of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Monday afternoon; and 460 kilometers west southwest of Vigan, Ilocos Sur by Tuesday afternoon.

Catanduanes will experience stormy weather while the rest of eastern Luzon will have rains and gusty winds and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough.

The rest of Luzon and Visayas will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming widespread rains over eastern Luzon which may trigger flashfloods or landslides.

Mindanao will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers and thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over northern and western Luzon with moderate to rough seas.

Elsewhere, winds light to moderate blowing from the northeast to southwest with slight to moderate seas.

Paeng is moving northwesterly track, at 17 kph and is expected to hit land Sunday afternoon.

The typhoon was expected to hit land in Aurora and Isabela provinces by Sunday evening, before moving to the northern provinces of Ifugao, Mountain Province and Ilocos Sur.

Pagasa has advised the public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned to take appropriate actions and watch for weather bulletins.

The northern and western seaboards of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain shower. Winds of 40 to 65 KPH (22 to 35 knots) are expected and sea conditions will be rough to very rough with wave heights of 2.5 to 5.0 meters.

Fishing boats and other small seacrafts were advised not to venture out into the sea while bigger sea vessels were alerted against moderate to high waves.

Public storm signal 1 - the least severe - was raised over the eastern provinces of Camarines, Albay, Sorsogon, Polillo island, Northern Samar, and the northeastern provinces of Aurora, Quezon, Quirino, Isabela and Cagayan, warning residents that winds of up to 60 kilometers (37 miles) per hour or intermittent rains may be expected.

Public storm signal 2 was hoisted over Catanduanes island, warning residents of winds of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour. (With AP reports/Sunnex)
