Mishap kills 3, mars holiday
CEBU CITY -- Three people were killed in a collision between an Isuzu cargo truck and a motorcycle in Dalaguete, Cebu Wednesday past 9 a.m.
They were on their way to visit the tombs of their relatives in the Barangay Mantalongon cemetery.
But as they maneuvered a sharp curve a few meters from the public market, their Kawasaki motorcycle crashed into a cargo truck.
Upon impact, all three -- motorcycle driver Roberto Medina, 26, his sister Evelyn, 22, and neighbor Thelma Evarola, 23, were thrown some meters away.
They died instantly.
Their motorcycle was pinned by the truck's rear wheels. The truck, carrying sacks of rice and corn, was on its way to Barangay Maluray in the same southern town, according to police.
Medina was among the survivors in the mining explosion in the town in December last year that killed eight of his co-workers, including Evelyn's live-in partner Enrico Zonega.
After the tragedy, Medina quit his job.
Medina's elder brother said over radio dyLA that it was bad luck because his brother and sister were on their way to visit their dead relatives.
Dalaguete homicide investigator PO1 Richard Talingting said truck driver Joselito Elimino was to bring his load to the public market in Mantalongon.
He said Elimino failed to avoid the collision because the motorcycle was going fast and on his right was a deep cliff.
But Elimino may have to face a complaint for reckless driving resulting in multiple homicide.
Talingting said that after the accident, Elimino proceeded to the house of retired Regional Trial Court judge Epifanio Llanos to surrender.
Elimino was turned over to the police station for investigation past 3 p.m. Wednesday. (AIV of Sun.Star Cebu)
