Guv 'rejects' Mayor Pineda as 2007 running mate By Marna H. Dagumboy and Joel Mapiles
LUBAO -- Pampanga Governor Mark Lapid has apparently "turned down" the proposal of the Pampanga Mayors League (PML) to have its president, Lubao Mayor Dennis Pineda, as the his running mate in the upcoming May 2007 elections.
This was learned during the PML's regular meeting attended by Lapid and almost all the mayors of the province who convened at the King's Royale Hotel and Restaurant in Bacolor on Tuesday.
The governor, during various activities earlier, was apparently heard endorsing business executive Paul "Con-con" Laus as his running mate.
Lapid, it was learned, sees Laus as "a very good partner in development, considering his background in the private sector."
According to a source, who asked not to be named, most if not all the mayors were somewhat "offended" by Lapid's decision to turn down the league's proposal to field Pineda as his vice gubernatorial bet.
The source said the mayors felt "betrayed" by Lapid's decision, adding that they were not even consulted in the matter.
The same source said Lapid, who is the provincial chairman of the Lakas-Christian-Muslim Democrats, should have also consulted with the mayors in accordance with party affiliation rules. They said some of the slots in the Provincial Board (PB) and mayoralty posts had already been filled up without their knowledge.
The mayors noted that they do not intend to quarrel with the governor, but they are just voicing out their sentiments on the issue. They stressed that it's about time that the PML and Provincial Government develop a tangible working relationship and partnership for the good of the whole province. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
