Officials condemn killings, blame communist rebels (8:46 p.m.)

MANILA -- Authorities are working tirelessly to solve the murders of activists and journalists, officials said Tuesday.

They blame the murders on a campaign by communist insurgents to erode public trust in the government.

"We understand the concerns raised by well-meaning quarters about these developments and the President is equally concerned," presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said in a statement.

On Monday, the chambers of commerce of the United States and other countries jointly called on the government of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to end politically motivated killings of leftists and journalists or risk losing foreign investment and aid.

The unprecedented appeal follows a long string of unsolved killings which some critics of the government suggest are linked to security forces, who often refer to left-wing and human rights activists as fronts for communist rebels. (AP)
