BAGUIO CITY -- Murder charges have been filed against two persons suspected of shooting to death Abra Provincial Board Member James Burgos Bersamin in Bangued town on Saturday, police said on Tuesday.

Bersamin was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding men while he was jogging in the town park at 5:15 a.m. on Saturday.

Police later identified his killers as Misael Aquino Gatoc, 39, of Sinapangan, Zone 6, Bangued, Abra, and July Palma Aldaca, 22, of Lubluba, Dolores, Abra.

The two suspects were able to elude arrest at the time of the killing but were captured during follow-up operations by a composite police task force this week.

Police Regional Office Director Raul Gonzales said Aldace reportedly works as a caretaker in the house of Danglas Municipal Councilor Gina Jerkins Alcartado.

Reports said Bersamin, 56, a resident of Zone 4, Bangued, was working out along Rizal Street in Zone 5, when the suspects, then on board a motorcycle without plate, shot him repeatedly.

Responding policemen recovered six spent caliber .45 shells, two deformed bullet slugs, and one deformed copper jacket of the same caliber.

Gadoc and Aldaca were charged with murder before the Abra Provincial Prosecutor's Office.

Gonzales said they have been closely monitoring crime incidences in Abra following the series of political killings in the province.

He said since political rivalry is strong in the province, they are looking into politics with personal intent as the motive in the murder of Bersamin, who had reportedly been preparing to run for mayor of Bangued in next year's elections. (Sun.Star Baguio/Sunnex)
