Arroyo fit but needs to lose weight: doctor
MANILA -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo remains healthy but needs to trim down, her doctors said Sunday as the government moved to quash rumors the leader was suffering from a liver ailment.
Arroyo was taken to an upscale private hospital Saturday for a "routine executive medical check up" and results showed she was fit, her physician Juliet Cervantes said in a medical bulletin.

However, she said Arroyo, 59, needed to lose about four kilograms to reach her ideal weight of 50 kilograms, at her height of four feet 11 inches.
The President was advised to do more exercise and reduce her intake of carbohydrates and fats, she said.
Arroyo is to be discharged this morning.
The President was initially expected to be discharged at 6 p.m. Sunday but she opted to leave the hospital this morning, as she wanted to wait for First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo, who needs to stay overnight in the hospital to complete additional tests.
Reports said doctors found "something" and wanted to ensure the First Gentleman's medical conditions.
Cervantes said it was not serious and Mike could go home Monday. She said they simply prefer that the first gentleman rest overnight at the hospital to prepare for additional workups.
She, however, said that she could not divulge additional details as "the First Gentleman in the first place is a private individual, plus the fact that we respect family's request for patients' confidentiality."
She said the First Family requested that any additional information about the conditions of the President's husband be kept from the public. But she said that Mike Arroyo is overweight and needs to lose more pounds or kilograms than the President.
"I think we do not have to be a doctor to assess that the First Gentleman is really overweight. Even if you are not a doctor, you can assess that he's a little big for his height that is why we strongly recommended he really has to lose weight," she said.
She said President Arroyo had been advised to do more exercises and reduce intake of carbohydrates and fats to lose at least two kilograms. She said there were also no restrictions as far as the Arroyo's work schedules are concerned and the President may "do anything she wants until what time she wants, no restrictions because everything is normal."
Rumors of Arroyo's poor health centered around a possible liver ailment after her third trip to the hospital this year. In July she was confined with flu, followed by a bout with diarrhea in September. (AP/Sunnex)
