Videoke ruckus banned from 10 p.m. onwards By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO CITY -- Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Sunday signed an executive order banning loud videoke music beyond 10 p.m. in Davao City.
Duterte signed the order during his television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" and said implementation of the order starts Monday.

Duterte, in his order, said all videoke-karaoke and sing-along machines in bars, restaurants, eateries, and similar establishments without effective sound proofing to ensure that the noise does not disturb anyone outside their establishment should cease operation by 10 p.m.
The mayor said loud videoke machines have become a nuisance to many residents especially those living near Matina Times Beach.
Duterte, who lives at Doņa Luisa Subdivision, said he could hear the noise coming from videoke machines during wee hours of the morning. The subdivision is about a kilometer and a half away from Times Beach.
"The voices are like croaking frogs and their dictions, my God," Duterte said.
Duterte said establishments found violating the order will be closed and their business permits cancelled.
For customers who insist on singing beyond 10 p.m., Duterte said the penalty will be "death by hanging."
"These people will not heed us not unless we hang them," Duterte said in jest.
He said people normally go to sleep by 10 p.m., especially those who have work the following day, and the children who have to go to school.
But loud videoke music ring on till 2 a.m. and it is impossible to imagine how anyone can sleep with such noise.
In the same television program, Duterte also hinted that he is mulling over moving earlier the long-established liquor ban in the city.
The city has been observing a liquor ban since Duterte's first stint as city mayor in 1988.
Due to the liquor ban, bars and other nightspots close by 2 a.m.
Duterte said he wants the ban to be earlier, maybe by midnight. "I don't want to see drunk people in the streets at 2 a.m.," he said. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
