CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- A bank in Barangay San Agustin ended up P7,000 richer than when robbers ran away with P240,000 in cash from its counters last week.

Police arrested the group behind the Union Bank robbery and returned P247,000 (or P7,000 more than what was lost) to the bank, said Mayor Oscar Rodriguez on Monday.

Responding to an alarm sounded by Union Bank shortly after noon on November 22, policemen engaged suspected robbers in a brief firefight, killing three and arresting three others. They recovered P247,000 in cash from the suspected robbers.

The City Government through Rodriguez commended the police, headed by Superintendent Audie Atienza, for catching the group behind the robbery.

Rodriguez also said the return of the money intact to the bank underscores the honesty of the city police.

Through a resolution passed by the City Council, the City Government cited the police for their successful operation against the six-man robbery group.

The suspects -- Joseph Boreo, Cesar Pestano, and Marcelino Dawa -- were arrested with minor wounds. Their three cohorts, identified as Mike Betablan, Roberto Lopez, and Joseph Pepito, were killed during the clash with policemen.

Rodriguez said that with the neutralization of the robbers, bank robbery in the province suffered a major setback.

"The exemplary performance, efficiency, and loyalty in the performance of their duty of the San Fernando police deserves a meritorious commendation and appreciation from all Fernandinos whom they vowed to serve at all times and at all cost," he said.

Aside from Atienza, police officials who were also given citations were Chief Inspectors Bernard Perez, Abel Lingat, Ricardo David and Ferdinand Germino; Senior Inspectors Romy Magtoto and Mike de Guzman; Inspectors Victor San Antonio, Mario Dulin and Willy Manaloto; Senior Police Officer (SPO) 3s Rosendo Pelayo and Ernesto Timbang Jr.; SPO1 Jesus Torres; PO3 Vidal Lingat; and PO2s Edgar Panlilio, Anthony Lazaro, Gerardo Umali, Aldrin Lingat, Norman Mariano, Agustin Yco and Jayson Constantino.
