1 killed in bus explosion in northern RP (7:10 p.m.)

OLONGAPO -- A bus conductor was killed when a box apparently left behind by a passenger exploded Thursday in the northern Philippines, police and witnesses said.

The explosion also triggered a fire that partly gutted the bus, said police chief Senior Superintendent Angelito Pacia, police chief of Olongapo city, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of the Philippine capital, Manila.

A janitor said that as he went inside the bus to clean, he saw the conductor carrying a box that suddenly exploded, killing the conductor and throwing him out of the vehicle. A passerby also was slightly injured.

Pacia could not immediately say what caused the explosion. (AP)
