By Aubrey Revilla

DAVAO CITY -- A bus conductor died while his two women companions in a rented van were injured in a daylight ambush in Bangkal at near noon on Monday.

The victim was identified as Ting Alon Tula, 41, a conductor of Grand Transport Corporation and a resident of Mapano Street in Kabacan, North Cotabato.

Confined at the Davao Doctors' Hospital are Rebecca Mamaluba, 30, a midwife and resident of Datu Piang in Maguindanao, and her niece Prida Gumbay, a student.

Initial investigation of the Talomo Police Precinct showed that the three were riding a red van from Gloriani's Rent-a-Car on their way home to Cotabato when ambushed along MacArthur Highway in Bangkal near radio station dxSS at around 11 a.m.

According to witnesses, Tula had just attended a court hearing at the Hall of Justice in Ecoland Subdivision for a still unknown case.

It was Bong Palgan, the policemen said, who called up Gloriani's and arranged to rent a van for Kabacan in North Cotabato. Palgan rode with the three as soon as the van arrived.

As they left the Hall of Justice, a Hi-Ace van, another still unidentified van, and two motorcycles appeared to have followed them.

The red van that was carrying Tula was blocked as it approached the vicinity of dxSS and the gunmen with high-powered firearms sprayed bullets on them, hitting the passengers and breaking the rear window and the passenger's window on the left side.

Tula died on the spot.

The two women, who were seated at the back, were hit after the gunmen opened fire at the rear of the van.

Palgan was nowhere to be seen when help arrived.

The police are still trying to look into Tula's background and the case he was facing to find a lead on why he was killed.

Tula's body was brought to the Angel Funeral Homes in Toril. (Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
