Police Regional Director Ismael Rafanan identified one of the suspects as Raymond Santos Dominguez, 22, of Calumpit, Bulacan, who was arrested in Barangay Iba-Este, Calumpit, Bulacan hours after the ambush.
A report said Lacanilao was on his way home on board his Mitsubishi Outlander when two armed men -- on board a Toyota Vios -- fired at him.
Police said Dominguez hurriedly fled after the incident. Twenty-three spent shells for an M16 armalite rifle were recovered from the crime scene.
According to witnesses, shortly before Lacanilao was ambushed, they noticed a car parked near the crime scene.
Several motives -- including politics, business rivalry, and love triangle -- are among the angles being pursued by the police.
Lacanilao, according to rumors, was also being groomed by his supporters to run for vice mayor in the 2007 elections.
Mayor Lacanilao, however, said he does not believe that politics was the motive for his son's killing, saying he was not involved in it.
He said that except for him "no one among his family members has joined the political arena." He however gave police investigators a full hand in the conduct of the probe on his son's death. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
