Power coop given 2 weeks to pay P70-M debt
By Raymond C. Garcia

APALIT -- The National Power Corporation (Napocor) has granted a two-week extension to the Pampanga 3 Electric Cooperative (Pelco 3) to settle its reported debt of P70 million.

Officials of the two power providers agreed on this move when they met last December 11 at the Napocor main office in Quezon City.

On December 4, Napocor issued a notice of disconnection signed by Alexander Japon, Napocor senior department manager for finance, to the local power supplier for its failure to pay its debt.

"In view thereof, Napocor requests Pelco 3 to pay at least P70,810,678.36, equivalent to the cooperative's October 2006 power bill," a portion of the letter stated.

The disconnection would have been implemented on December 11 if Pelco 3 officials had not begged the national power provider to give them more time.

Engineer Rommel Calilong, a Pelco 3 official, said Napocor has granted the cooperative a two-week extension tagged with a condition that it should submit a proposed restructure of loans approved by the National Electrification Administration (NEA).

However, he revealed that they are not yet sure if NEA will approve the proposed restructure of loans.

The two-week extension will expire on December 26, 2006, a day after Christmas.

"We will see what we can do during that extension and we promise that we will do our best to raise the said amount," he said.

Calilong also bared the cooperative's plans for the coming days regarding the problem they are currently facing.

"We have proposed two plans in view of our existing problem. First is that we let NEA approve our proposed restructure of loans; second, we do massive collection and disconnection," he said.

Moreover, the Pelco 3 official said they are optimistic that they will be able to pay within the deadline given by Napocor. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
