CAMP RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ, Libertad, Butuan City -- A town police chief and his deputy were killed while an undetermined number of persons were wounded in an ambush Wednesday by communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Agusan del Sur.

Killed in Sitio Bayanihan, Barangay Robaco during the 3 p.m. ambush were municipal police chief Enrico Bravo Bamba of San Luis, Agusan del Sur and his acting deputy, Espiridion Palma.

Caraga Police Regional Office Director Antonio Dator Nanas said the victims were with a convoy of military personnel from the 402nd Infantry Battalion when the ambush occurred.

The attack came amid intensified operations between the military and the communist rebels in the absence of a Christmas ceasefire.

Nanas said landmines were used by the communist rebels in attacking the police officers and military convoy.

"They were supervising security measures for the Araw ng Barangay Poblacion San Luis when they decided to go to the Municipal Hall to report something to the local officials there when the ambush occurred," Nanas said.

The San Luis Municipal Hall building is a short distance from the area where the ambush occurred since Barangay Robaco is the town center of San Luis.

Nanas said some policemen and military personnel in the convoy were wounded.

Police are withholding their identities because their families have not been informed, said Nanas. He added that a joint police and military team is now hunting down the rebels, Nanas said.

"The rebels fled after they opened fire and detonated the landmines," Nanas said.

Nanas said he ordered Scene of the Crime Operatives to investigate the incident and ordered the legal department of the police to file appropriate charges against the communist rebels. (Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
