Opposition leader in House wants poll body to ensure credible May election results (10:26 a.m.)
MANILA -- House Minority Leader Francis Escudero is resigned to the fact that the Commission on Elections (Comelec) would not be overhauled before the mid-term elections in May.
Escudero instead asked the Comelec, led by its chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr., to make the elections results "believable and acceptable to the people" as this would be the only way he and his people could vindicate themselves from numerous accusations that they were part of the massive fraud during the 2004 presidential elections. “ "The Comelec must earn the respect of the people which they have lost during the last elections. To my mind, this is a golden opportunity for Chairman Abalos and the rest of the commissioners to redeem themselves,”" said Escudero, who is being eyed as one of the senatorial bets of the opposition.
Escudero and other members of the opposition, including detained former President Joseph Estrada have been demanding a total revamp of the Comelec amidst continued allegations that it has something to do with massive cheating in the 2004 presidential elections that put Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to power.
