Gov't to object to detained ex-senator's plea to personally file candidacy (10:23 a.m.)
MANILA -- The Department of Justice (DOJ) has opposed the motion of detained former senator Gregorio "Gringo" Honasan asking the court to allow him out of his detention center to personally file his certificate of candidacy at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as an independent senator in the May elections.
Citing security threats and Honasan's past history of escape from military custody, Assistant Chief State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon said they will file an opposition to the motion for leave filed last Tuesday by the senator's lawyer, Daniel Gutierrez, before the sala of Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge Oscar Pimentel.
"He is a security threat. Definitely we will oppose the motion on the grounds of being a flight risk," Fadullon said.
Fadullon's deputy, Juan Pedro Navera expressed the same position and said Honasan might utilize the leave if allowed to escape detention.
He said Gutierrez could instead file the certificate of candidacy of his client. (AH) |
