Cops, soldiers exempt from gun ban: poll body By Marna H. Dagumboy
CAMP OLIVAS -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) approved a resolution that exempts law enforcers, including military personnel, from the election gun ban.
Comelec Commissioner Florentino Tuason Jr., however, said the exemption would only apply to police and military personnel in complete uniform doing their respective official duties.
He said the exemption of policemen and soldiers from the gun ban was approved Wednesday.
"Police and military personnel are exempt from the gun ban, provided they are on official duty, in complete uniform with names, serial numbers, and with ranks visible," Tuason told Central Luzon police and military officials during a conference on election matters.
The measure modifies Comelec Resolution 7764-A, which excluded no one including police and military personnel from a total gun ban. The ruling drew mixed reactions from soldiers and policemen.
The meeting, which was attended by military and police officials in the region, was initiated by Police Regional Director Ismael Rafanan. The official wanted to clarify with Comelec several election-related issues such as the gun ban, transfer of personnel, and request to place an area under Comelec control.
Tuason, who is also the chairman of the Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV), also defined the role of the military during the election period.
He said soldiers are deployed in one place upon request of interested parties but they will serve to augment the police in the maintenance of peace and order.
The commissioner said the request for Comelec control should be addressed to the regional election director, who will assess the situation before recommending approval. Also discussed during the meeting were the rules and guidelines for politicians requesting bodyguards or escorts. (Sun.Star Pampanga/Sunnex)
