Village head shot in Bukidnon

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- A barangay chairman of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon was summarily executed by unidentified armed men while heading home onboard his vehicle over the weekend.

According to reports from the Malaybalay City police, the barangay chairman, identified as Siriaco Caganhan, was gunned down by M-16 rifle-wielding men onboard a motorcycle.

Caganhan was rushed to the Malaybalay City hospital where he died not long after.

Malaybalay police said they were looking into the possibility that the assault was politically motivated.

However, they are also looking into reports that the attack may be in retaliation to the victim getting acquitted in a rape case that occurred in the area.

A witness to the murder, who was riding with the official in his vehicle during the attack, remains in shock and was unable to undergo interrogation.

The identity of the witness is withheld pending results of the investigation.

Caganhan's murder comes on the heels of an attack on Barangay San Miguel chairman Joseph Baduyo by motorcycle-riding men.

Baduyo said he, his wife, and child who rode with him in a motorcycle managed to survive the shooting by five armed men.

The motive behind the attack on Baduyo was unknown.

The Police Regional Office and the Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Northern Mindanao identified Baungon town as one of the "areas of concern" this May elections.

Ex-Comelec commissioner Virgilio Garcillano, who hails from Baungon town, is set to run for congressman in the first district of Bukidnon province.

Malaybalay City, which is Bukidnon's capital, also falls under the province's first district.

The Fourth Infantry Division and the regional police said security in "areas of concern" has been stepped up to prevent the incidence of election-related violence. (Stephen Capillas of Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
