Poll body places Abra province under its control

MANILA -- Owing to "growing lawlessness" in Abra, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday placed the province under its control and designated Commissioner Romeo Brawner as in charge.

"This will take effect as soon as possible and will be enforced until this lawlessness has ended," said Comelec Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr.

Abalos said a resolution is now being prepared and will take effect once the commission en banc promulgates it.

He added that members of a special team would soon be named to assist Brawner.

Among those being considered for the special team are: police regional director, highest Army officer of Abra, and Comelec's regional chief.

Brawner clarified that his job is only to directly supervise Abra Governor Vicente Valera, who remains to be the province's top official and will continue to carry out his functions as chief executive.

Valera had asked the Comelec to place Abra under its control due to political tension in the province. Valera had been implicated in the murder of Abra Representative Luis Bersamin Jr. last December. (MSN/Sunnex)
