ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The military is checking the reported arrival of armed groups in the province of Zamboanga del Sur coming from the provinces of Lanao and Cotabato, purposely to be used in the forthcoming May 14 elections.

Army 102nd Infantry Brigade chief Jovencio Magalso said he has ordered the launch of an intensified intelligence operation to determine who among the politicians have hired the services of these armed groups.

Zamboanga del Sur provincial election officer Ignacio Baya disclosed that the armed groups allegedly hired by an influential politician have arrived in the town of Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur.

Tukuran is the last municipality of Zamboanga del Sur before Lanao. Zamboanga del Sur has 25 towns and one city.

Magalso said they would file appropriate charges in court once they've identified the politicians who hired the armed groups.

They will also determine whether the armed groups have affiliation with any of the lawless elements operating in the area.

Baya has recommended the inclusion of Tukuran town in the Commission on Elections (Comelec) list of areas of immediate concerns in the May polls.

The Comelec regional office has earlier identified the towns of Dimataling, Dinas, Labangan and Olutanga in Zamboanga del Sur as areas of immediate concerns. (Sunnex)
