Village folk allowed to arm against rebels By Jay Dooma Balnig
ILOILO CITY -- Local folks in a barangay in Antique were recently allowed by the Philippine Army to carry firearms so they could protect themselves against the communist New People's Army (NPA).
Lieutenant Colonel Nestor Porculas of the Philippine Army's 79th Infantry Battalion said in a radio interview that local folks of Sitio Apong, Barangay Cabladan, Sibalom must use the firearms only against NPA rebels.

Porculas cited in particular members of the NPA's Napoleon Tumagtang Command.
Local folks in Cabladan in the town of Sibalom left their homes after the rebels killed someone from their village.
Communist rebels recently called on the people to return to their homes, explaining that the killing of Jomar Magalan was an isolated case.
"Ka Areston Remus" of the Southern Front Panay Committee of the NPA, in his letter, said they punished Magalan for what he did to the movement and that the community is not liable for his deeds.
The rebels, in their press statement, assured the public that peace and order has been restored in the area.
Communist guerillas seized and killed Magalan in Sitio Danao after accusing him of committing offenses against the movement.
The killing resulted in a mass evacuation of the local folks who feared that they might be next.
Magalan, reportedly a military informer, was placed summarily executed by rebels operating in southern Iloilo and Antique.
Local residents of Sitio Apong condemned the killing. (Sun.Star Iloilo/Sunnex)
